Good Fats and Bad Fats
Some fats are bad such as saturated fats and trans-fats. However, there's another kind of fat called essential fatty acids - and they are indeed essential. These unsaturated fats, including omega-3 and omega-6 fats, make our cell membranes more flexible, lower blood pressure and cholesterol, and reduce mortality from heart disease. (Diabetic Nutrition, Essential Fatty Acids, Heart Disease, High Blood Pressure)

Fish Fatty Acids May Prevent More Sudden Deaths Than Defibrillators
Omega-3 fatty acids may prevent more sudden deaths than automated external defibrillators in homes and public places or implanted defibrillators, according to the results of a new study. (Heart Attack, Omega-3 Fatty Acids)

Other Important Supplements - Essential Fatty Acids
There are two main EFA groups: omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids. EFAs are components of cell membranes the body needs but cannot manufacture itself. (Peripheral Neuropathy, Diabetic Complications, Essential Fatty Acids)

Folic Acid
The right amount of folic acid in your blood can go a long way to squashing your vulnerability to cardiovascular disease. (Cardiovascular Disease, Folic Acid, Diabetic Complications)

Omega-3 Fish Oil Supplements Beat Statin Drugs
In a recent issue of the Archives of Internal Medicine, 97 clinical trials that included 275,000 subjects were reviewed regarding the effects of various lipid lowering regimens on overall mortality and mortality from coronary heart disease.  Mortality risk was reduced 23 percent by omega-3 fatty acid supplements - Omega-3 fatty acids provided almost double the benefit of statins. (High triglyceride, Diabetic product)

Fish Helps Statins Protect The Heart
People taking cholesterol-lowering drugs called statins who also consume omega-3 fatty acids - typically found in fish and fish oil - have a better chance of avoiding heart problems than patients who take statins alone.  (High Cholesterol, Statins, Omega-3 Fats, Cardiovascular Disease)

Take L-Carnitine For Energy Plus
L-Carnitine plays an essential role in the healthy functioning of the body. Every form of life, from the simplest single-cell organism to the unfathomably complex human body, depends on carnitine for energy production within the cells. (Heart Disease, Diabetes, High Triglycerides)

Diets High In Omega-3 Oils Prevent Heart Attacks
Omega-3 fatty acids are lipid structures found abundantly in cold water fish and flaxseed oil. They have been extensively researched for their ability to prevent and treat cardiovascular disease. (Cardiovascular Disease, High Cholesterol, High Blood Pressure, Heart Attack)

B Vitamins Battle Heart Disease
The evidence is steadily coming in showing that supplementing with B vitamins not only lowers homocysteine, but reduces other heart-risky conditions. (Heart Disease, Stroke, Homocysteine, Vitamin B)

The Fats That Can Save Your Life
Unfortunately, most folks assume that fats, in general, are detrimental to health when, in fact, desirable fats produce remarkable benefits. Consider what are called the omega-3 fatty acids found in both fish and flax oil. Research shows that these fats support better health in significant ways.

Supplemental GLA Improves Dry Eye in Sjogren's Syndrome
Affecting more than 1.4 million Americans, Sjogren's syndrome is an autoimmune disorder in which immune cells attack and destroy the glands that produce tears and saliva. The hallmark symptoms of the disorder are dry mouth and dry eyes. Sjogren's syndrome is also frequently associated with rheumatic disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis. (Sjogren's Syndrome, GLA)

Type 2 Diabetics' Acidity Heightens Risk For Kidney Stones
Individuals with type 2 diabetes (non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus) are at increased risk for developing kidney stones in general, and have a particular risk for uric-acid stones. (Diabetic Complications and Type 2 Diabetes)

Popular Drugs that Steal Nutrients
Many medications deplete the body of important vitamins and minerals. Depletion of nutrients is among the most common -- and overlooked -- side effects of both over-the-counter (OTC) and prescription drugs. Here’s How to Protect Your Health...

Vitamin B12
Vitamin B12, also called cobalamin, is one of eight water-soluble B vitamins. All B vitamins help the body to convert carbohydrates into glucose (sugar) which is "burned" to produce energy. (Heart Disease, Neuropathy, Stress)

GLA: The "Good" Omega-6
There is a fat in the omega-6 family which is a powerful key to vibrant health and radiant beauty: GLA, or gamma linolenic acid. In fact, your body needs the right balance of omega-3s as well as GLA from the omega-6 family, much like it needs the proper combination of vitamins and minerals for smooth-running metabolic functions. (GLA, Cardiovascular Health, Diabetes, Arthritis, Cholesterol)

alpha cell  (AL-fa)
a type of cell in the pancreas. Alpha cells make and release a hormone called glucagon. The body sends a signal to the alpha cells to make glucagon when blood glucose falls too low. Then glucagon reaches the liver where it tells it to release glucose into the blood for energy.

acarbose  (AK-er-bose)
an oral medicine used to treat Type 2 diabetes. It blocks the enzymes that digest starches in food. The result is a slower and lower rise in blood glucose throughout the day, especially right after meals. Belongs to the class of medicines called alpha-glucosidase inhibitors. (Brand name: Precose)

glucagon (GLOO-kah-gahn)
a hormone produced by the alpha cells in the pancreas. It raises blood glucose. An injectable form of glucagon, available by prescription, may be used to treat severe hypoglycemia.

islets
groups of cells located in the pancreas that make hormones that help the body break down and use food. For example, alpha cells make glucagon and beta cells make insulin. Also called islets of Langerhans (LANG-er-hahns).

miglitol (MIG-lih-tall)
an oral medicine used to treat Type 2 diabetes. It blocks the enzymes that digest starches in food. The result is a slower and lower rise in blood glucose throughout the day, especially right after meals. Belongs to the class of medicines called alpha-glucosidase inhibitors. (Brand name: Glyset)
